One Walk Glasgow 2024

Elena Gowans

I’m taking part in One Walk Glasgow to help raise money to fund life-changing research and make a difference to the lives of people affected by type 1!

On the 21st December 2022, the day before my 6th birthday, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I spent my birthday in hospital and I was lucky enough to get out for Christmas, due to the help of the wonderful doctors and nurses who taught my Mum and Dad how to look after me.

Every day I take a minimum of 6 jags to keep me alive. When I started I had to finger prick myself every hour and work out how much insulin I needed or sweeties to prevent a hypo. Thanks to JDRF and others I now have a little dexcom sensor showing my Mum and Dad how in control I am. Because of the charity work that is done, I have this support.

This year - I am looking forward to moving onto an insulin pump. This will limit the amount of injections I need to take and help my body regulate the insulin I need.

JDRF have helped make my very complicated life easier. I wish I had a panaceas that worked and I am sure if as many people as possible continue to support JDRF they will find a way for that.

Please take the time to support this wonderful charity, who have helped me and my family greatly.
